Hitchhiking is also known as thumbing. It’s definitely one of the cheapest means of transportation. Hitchhikers ask strangers for a ride in their cars or other vehicles. Hitchhiking is not as risky as many people believe. It is a safe activity as long as you use common sense and follow certain rules.
Note down some details about the car that you’ve entered (preferably the plate number, model, make and colour). Text them to your friend or a family member and let the driver know that you’ve done it. Your ride will believe that they are under surveillance. Moreover, if there are some people around you, you can pretend to wave to them and say goodbye. The driver will assume that you know them and that your friends or family members know the car you’ve entered.
Choose your ride carefully. A lot of drivers are going to stop for you, but you don’t need to accept every single ride. Look into the car and make sure that the driver is sober. If you don’t feel comfortable enough because there are too many guys in the car or the driver seems angry or weird, don’t accept it. Talk to the driver, but make it crystal clear that you’re only interested in getting to your destination. Moreover, try to avoid controversial topics. Talking about politics, abortion or similar subjects, is not a good idea because you don’t know how they might react. If they start such a topic, you can try to change it or, even if you disagree with them, avoid expressing strong opinions.
