Man: And now another caller with their holiday story…
Woman: You see, when we opened the door to the beach house and got inside we were in shock. There were dirty dishes in the sink, some food on the table and towels on the bathroom floor. We were furious but started cleaning everything up. After a few minutes my phone rang. It was the owner who wanted to know where we were because she was waiting for us to check us in. (C)  To cut a long story short, it turned out that we were supposed to be staying in another house! We forgot to check the house number again and we went into the wrong one which had been left open! How silly!

Man: Let’s go to Denny’s Restaurant. They’re open 24 hours a day, all year round.
Woman: Great idea! You know what I heard? One Christmas Eve there was a heavy snowstorm so the owners thought about closing the place till the morning. Unfortunately they couldn’t. They didn’t have any locks as they had never needed them!
Man: Wow! How did it end?
Woman: (A)  The owners decided to stay at work and let the staff leave.  This was the first time it had ever happened! And three days later locks were installed. Just in case.

And now some local news. Zebra crossings get ignored by many drivers. Many tricks such as flashing lights have been tried but with no success. On Main Street in Glasgow there is a new solution – the first ever 3D crosswalk. (B)  The way it’s painted creates an optical illusion, which makes the crosswalk look like a huge barrier on the road. When drivers get closer, they reduce their speed.  Then the image is gone and they realise it is an ordinary pedestrian crossing.

Woman: You’re late.
Man: You won’t believe what happened to me! I went up to my car, hit the button on my remote car key and nothing! After a few tries I called the mechanic.
Woman: And?
Man: When he arrived, he first asked me if I’d locked the keys in my car. I explained that I had the remote control with me, but it wouldn’t open the car. (C)   He took the remote control, pressed one of the buttons on it and the key appeared. The mechanic gave the key to me and I simply opened the door with it.  But I felt ashamed I had forgotten that inside the remote control there is a key!

Do you like challenges? You may want to take part in a challenge run by a museum in a Japanese goldmine. All you have to do is get a gold bar out of a glass box. It’s a real gold bar, worth half a million dollars, and it weighs 12.5 kg. The hole in the box is not really large enough to allow one arm through. You need to turn the box the right way to get the bar out. (A)  If you succeed, you have to give the gold bar back, but you get $1250 for your effort.  In the seven years since the museum opened, thousands of visitors have tried to get the bar out. But only 600 of them  have won the prize.

Man: I really don’t know. There are so many options.
Woman: Let’s choose only those with the words “low budget” in the heading.
Man: Good idea. Our budget is limited. I don’t want to spend more than £500. But still, the (B)  flat has got to get a new look.
Woman: The best way is to  hire an interior designer.
Man: We don’t need to pay anybody for the design. You know I can do a lot of things myself. Let’s read some articles on the subject.
Woman: Have you seen this? How to  redecorate your small flat on a low budget ?
Man: Click on that link. It might be useful.
